However, it is unknown which properties on a small subgraph-scale of those functional brain networks are dominant at different frequencies bands. Motifs are the building blocks of networks on this level and have previously been identified as important features for healthy and abnormal brain function. In this study, we present a network construction that enables us to search and analyze motifs in different frequency bands. We give evidence that the bi-directional two-hop path is the most important motif for the information flow in functional brain networks. A clustering based on this motif exposes a spatially coherent yet frequency-dependent sub-division between the posterior, occipital and frontal brain regions.

Motif-Based Analysis of Effective Connectivity in Brain Networks

Network science has widely studied the properties of brain networks. Recent work has observed a global back-to-front pattern of information flow for higher frequency bands in magnetoencephalography data. However, the effective connectivity at a local level remains yet to be analyzed. On a local level, the building blocks of all networks are motifs. In this study, we exploit the measure of dPTE ...

BotOnus: an online unsupervised method for Botnet detection

Botnets are recognized as one of the most dangerous threats to the Internet infrastructure. They are used for malicious activities such as launching distributed denial of service attacks, sending spam, and leaking personal information. Existing botnet detection methods produce a number of good ideas, but they are far from complete yet, since most of them cannot detect botnets in an early stage ...

Innovative Algorithms and Evaluation Methods for Biological Motif Finding

Biological motifs are defined as overly recurring sub-patterns in biological systems. Sequence motifs and network motifs are the examples of biological motifs. Due to the wide range of applications, many algorithms and computational tools have been developed for efficient search for biological motifs. Therefore, there are more computationally derived motifs than experimentally validated motifs,...

Identifying Flow Units Using an Artificial Neural Network Approach Optimized by the Imperialist Competitive Algorithm

The spatial distribution of petrophysical properties within the reservoirs is one of the most important factors in reservoir characterization. Flow units are the continuous body over a specific reservoir volume within which the geological and petrophysical properties are the same. Accordingly, an accurate prediction of flow units is a major task to achieve a reliable petrophysical description o...

Functional Brain Connectivity Differences Between Different ADHD Presentations: Impaired Functional Segregation in ADHD-Combined Presentation but not in ADHD-Inattentive Presentation

Introduction: Contrary to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5), fifth edition, some studies indicate that ADHD-inattentive presentation (ADHD-I) is a distinct diagnostic disorder and not an ADHD presentation.  Methods: In this study, 12 ADHD-combined presentation (ADHD-C), 10 ADHD-I, and 13 controls were enrolled and their resting state EEG recorded. Following thi...
